Professional Learning for Equity Certification Training Becoming a Transformative Leader: Leadership for Equity

Twenty-eight school and district leaders were accepted into our 2-day Leadership for Equity Certification training. Participants engaged in dialogue and activities in which the prevalence of equity throughout their everyday experience was illuminated. Using an equity lens, leaders learned about the ways in which power and privilege undergird school and district policy and practice. To bring reality and context into the teaching of leadership for culturally responsive school systems, culturally responsive coaching was introduced, and participants had the opportunity to observe and practice their skills in helping others reflect more deeply about their own identity, teaching, and/or leadership style.

Participants.

  • Examined ways to engage others in reflections around identity and privilege in order to build awareness of leadership style, and capacity for decision making as it relates to culturally responsive practice and policy in school settings.
  • Explored frameworks and methods for coaching team members to be culturally responsive.
  • Identified shifts in thinking that support culturally responsive ways to implement meaningful, systemic change for equity.
  • Walked away with networking and reflection tools designed to keep professional learning for culturally responsive leadership at the forefront.
